No Roosters In Ybor City? Tampa Council To Consider Issue: Report

A wild chicken population in Ybor City dates back more than 100 years.

TAMPA, FL - No wild roosters in Ybor City? The Tampa City Council is expected to consider whether the roosters will be allowed to continue to roam the streets of Ybor. A wild chicken population dates back more than 100 years and some are direct descendants of the chickens that lived in the backyards of the neighborhoods earliest residents.

Some of the current Ybor City residents are asking that the City Council take up the issue. Councilman Frank Reddick has asked the city's legal department to look into changing an ordinance that protects the roosters.

"We're going to see what we can do to remove roosters from Ybor City in a very humane way," Reddick told News Channel 8.

Ybor City resident Tony LaColla says the roosters make too much noise and wants the city council to become involved. "The chickens are as noisy as can be. So, they're going at all hours of the morning. They usually start around 3, 3:30 in the morning and they'll continue all day long," LaColla told News Channel 8.

The city council will hear a report on the issue at Thursday's meeting.
