TAMPA, FL — Tampa fire officials are investigating a brush fire that broke out around 9:15 p.m. Friday at a property under development at Millbrook Avenue and West Fair Oaks Avenue in South Tampa.

Fire crews arrived to find heavy flames coming from a large brush pile next to a metal bin used for permitted burning. Investigators determined that embers from the bin spread to the nearby brush pile, which caused a massive fire.

The fire wasn't near any homes and the wind blew it westward toward the water, which reduced the threat.

Because the nearest hydrants were some distance away on Westshore Boulevard, fire crews had to lay more than 2,000 feet of hose to battle the blaze.

There were no injuries. Investigators will provide a preliminary report within the next 24 hours.
