Relay for Life of South Tampa Kicks off Saturday

Tampa Bay Buccaneers player Vincent Jackson will be attending opening ceremonies for the fundraiser sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

This just in from officials at the American Cancer Society:

The South Tampa community will fight back against cancer when the American
Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of South Tampa gets underway at Coleman Middle School on Saturday, May 4 starting at 2 p.m. and continuing until 8 a.m., Sunday, May 5.

The theme for the South Tampa Relay is “Arrrgh you ready for a cure?” The event will spotlight on pirate-themed activities throughout the 18-hour event. Funds raised at Relay For Life of South Tampa are allowing the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer within the community.

The event is fun for the whole family, and it is not too late to sign up to participate.

Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay.

Relay For Life of South Tampa will be honoring cancer survivors at the beginning of the event. In addition, the event will feature Relay’s take on Gasparilla with a “Relay-rilla” wagon parade. Participants will have a chance to show off their singing, dancing and musical skills while competing in “Relay’s Got Talent” talent showcase.

The event will include a luminaria ceremony after sundown to honor the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle the track surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer. Luminaria may be purchased at the event.
