Skin Cancer on the Rise, Feds Say
The U.S. Surgeon General issued a statement Tuesday warning of an increase in the number of people diagnosed with skin cancer.
A new Surgeon General’s report says too much ultraviolet radiation is becoming a public health issue.
The office of the Department of Health and Human Services issued a statement Tuesday warning of a rise in Americans diagnosed with skin cancer.
“Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, yet most cases are preventable,” said assistant health secretary Howard K. Koh of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Koh continued that there is no “‘safe’ tan” and that “tanned skin is damaged skin.”
According to the agency, over 63,000 Americans have melanoma, the most fatal form of the illness.

The health department is recommends reducing exposure to ultraviolet radiation and use of sunscreen.
