NEW TAMPA TRAGEDY: As the New Tampa community grapples to make sense of why a man would intentionally run down a father and his two sons riding their bikes, friends and strangers alike have come forward to help the now-fatherless children. Pedro Aguerreberry, 42, was taking a leisurely bike ride with his sons, Lucas, 8, and Bennett, 3, down New Tampa Boulevard just before noon on Sunday, June 24, when a car driven by Mikese Morse, 30, veered off the road and struck the family. Pedro Aguerreberry took the brunt of the impact and died at the hospital. Bennett Aguerreberry was taken to the hospital with a leg fracture while his older brother was treated for minor injuries. LIGHTNING STRIKES MAN: The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office says 33-year-old Seffner resident James W. Barton died after being struck by lightning on Siesta Key beach Sunday, June 24. Barton was on the beach near the 6000 block of Midnight Pass Road on Siesta Key around 2:15 p.m. when he was struck by lightning, according to the sheriff's office. A lifeguard on the scene and Sarasota paramedics performed CPR on Barton until he was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to deputies. JUROR ARREST: She showed up to do her duty as a juror and left wearing handcuffs. That's what happened to Kristine Victoria Mittler, 39, of 8234 Night Owl Court, New Port Richey, Monday, June 25, when she appeared at the West Pasco Judicial Center at 7530 Little Road, New Port Richey, to report for jury duty. The entrances to all 6th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida facilities are equipped with X-ray machines manned by security guards. Mittler never made it through the archway of the metal detector. GATOR ON AISLE 2: The mystery of how a 2-foot alligator found its way into a Lakewood Ranch Wawa store on June 15 has been solved. On Tuesday, June 26, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office arrested a 17-year-old teen who admitted to finding the gator in the wild and dropping it off at the Wawa store at 14510 State Road 70 as a joke. SINKHOLE SAGA: Families in six mobile homes in Caribbean Estates mobile home park in the Moon Lake Gardens area near New Port Richey have been asked to voluntarily evacuate their homes after a 15-foot sinkhole opened up in two yards on the 11790 block of Pearl Drive Monday, June 25.
