TAMPA, FL — It's always an emotional moment when a police officer who's dedicated his life to serving his community signs off on his police radio for the last time. But this week's final sign-off for Tampa Police Sgt. Edward Croissant brought tears to the most reserved members of the department.

After serving for 30 years in a variety of capacities, Croissant gave his last call Thursday, the same day his daughter, Caitlin, graduated from the police academy in anticipation of following in her father's footsteps. She will be sworn in as a Tampa police officer in a couple of weeks but before beginning her official duties, she offered a tribute to her father.

"Your dedication, leadership, integrity and bravery are just some of the reasons you have mentored countless officers, including your daughter who will carry on your legacy," she said.

Croissant served the police department in a number of capacities including as a police academy instructor. But he said he most relished his role walking the beat as a patrol officer where he became well-known throughout the communities he served for his bushy mustache and his sense of humor.

In addition to his police duties, Croissant served in the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard reserves.

Among those wishing Croissant good wishes on his retirement was Alicia Hollingsworth whose daughter trained to be a police officer under Croissant's tutelage.

"You brought my daughter under your wing and taught her so much through her college years and into the career that bleeds blue," Hollingsworth said. "Thank you for your service and for being the man my daughter could (and countless others) look up to. Your dedication to the LEO family has always gone over and above. For that we are thankful."

"One of the greatest I’ve known," said Tampa firefighter Whitney Ahl. "So honored to have had the chance to work with you and break bread at Station 11B."

"You're absolutely hands down one of the best out there," added firefighter Henry Williams. "Thank you for the many laughs and memories along the way."

"A cop's cop and a man who cared about his community and citizens," said Dennis Anthony. "Enjoyed working side by side with you, mostly in Ybor City. Thanks for your service and enjoy retirement."

"What a career this man has had," said Chris Harrison. "I thankfully have had the opportunity to work with Eddie from the other end of the radio and, let me tell you, he sure knew how to keep the shift exciting. He also taught the bike patrol classes during my time as an Explorer. What an experience that was as well. Thank you for your service, Sgt. Croissant."

Croissant was unable to hide his emotions as he relayed his final message on his police radio.

"To everyone out there, it's been my honor and privilege to fight the good fight with every one of you," he said. "“Stay safe, stay frosty and back each other up all the time."
