Tom Mortenson, political leader from Temple Terrace attends groundbeaking event in Lorton, VA.

Tom Mortenson from Temple Terrace, FL, particpated in the groundbreaking cermonies for a memorial to American suffragists Thursday in Lorton, Virginia. The site is on the Occoquan Workhouse prison grounds where women were brutally imprisoned for picketing the Wilson White House for the right to vote. These women suffered and endured unsanitary conditons, food that was unfit for human consumption, beaten, insulted, and some even forced feed. Mortenson said, " the memorial is long over due and represents the millions of women (and men) who fought for more than seven decades to win the vote."
Mortenson, a national speaker and writer on Suffrage noted that "less than 8% of all U.S. memorials and momuments dedicated to women, and with this memorial we can raise awareness of the struggle that resulted in the largest expanison of voters in a single day in our Nation's history."
The Turning Point National Suffrage Memorial will open on August 26, 2019, the Centennial of the 19th Amendment's official certification. For those interested in additonal details, please go to: https://suffragistmemorial.org/#
