Temple Terrace Library Looks to Lend More than Media

'Library of Things' concept allows public libraries to lend common household items.

TEMPLE TERRACE, FL – What if a person was able to go to the library not only to borrow a book about fixing a leaking pipe, but also he could also borrow a wrench that would help get the job done.

This could soon be possible at the Temple Terrace Public Library, thanks to the “library of things.” This growing movement expands library services by letting residents check out more than books DVDs or other media. Libraries across the country have started accepting donations of items in their communities, which in turn they can lend to library patrons.

The items can include tools, cameras, board games, cooking appliances, or any reusable item.

The Temple Terrace Public Library is expanding this concept in Hillsborough County with its new Beyond Books Lending Library. The library has already started collecting items with plans to dramatically expand. The library is seeking donated cookware, hand tools, board games, tape measures, clothes irons, small musical instruments and more.

“It’s a need we’ve seen that isn’t often expressed,” said Library Director Teressa Fraser. “Where can I get a plumber’s wrench without having to buy one? Where can I get a Dora the Explorer cake pan that I’m only going to use once? It’s a very practical service. You don’t have to buy something you’re only going to use one time.”

Hillsborough County offers computer tablets, anatomically correct human figures for physiological study and even ukuleles. But the Temple Terrace library will be offering much more, starting with household items with the hopes of one day expanding other items such as neckties, fine art and hobby kits.

“We’re open to suggestions,” Fraser said. “We’re going for a much broader, more diverse collection of items.”

The Temple Terrace Public Library will not accept items that require batteries or fuel, or that need repair. Items can be checked out for 21 days. There is a $1 per day late fee to encourage timely returns.

“Everyone we’ve spoken to has been really excited about it,” Fraser said. “We just want community involvement, whether it’s donating items or participating in the program. So far, we’ve gotten a great response.”
