Temple Terrace To Observe Fire Prevention Month With Open House

The Temple Terrace Fire Department will host its annual Fire Department Open House Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

TEMPLE TERRACE, FL -- In recognition of National Fire Prevention Month, the city of Temple Terrace Fire Department will host its annual Fire Department Open House Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1, 124 Bullard Parkway.

The theme of the 2018 event is "Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere."

The open house will feature interactive exhibits and firefighting equipment, including ladder trucks, pumpers and rescue vehicles. Youngsters can experience what it's like to be a firefighter by trying on the protective gear and putting out simulated house fires with water hoses. They also will learn how to safely escape a smoke-filled room.

Firefighters will conduct a mock vehicle extrication at 11 a.m. At noon they will demonstrate the importance of sprinklers in a residential setting by igniting simulated residences. They also will conduct kitchen fire safety demos throughout the day, as well as fire extinguisher training.

River the Rescue Dog will make a special appearance and stage a mock rescue. Temple Terrace Lodge 330 will conduct a free Masonic Child ID Program. In addition, there will be puppet shows, a balloon artist and other entertainment. Hot dogs and sodas will be available for purchase.

Participating agencies at this year's event include the Temple Terrace Fire Department, Temple Terrace Police Department, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Plant City Fire Rescue and Florida Fire Marshal's Office.

Sponsors include Firehouse Subs, Einstein Bagels, Wayne Automatic Sprinklers, Culligan Water, Publix,Winn-Dixie and Stepp's Towing.

Volunteers include Florida Hospital, the GFWC Temple Terrace Woman's Club, Moffitt Cancer Center, Florida College and USF's CERT Team.

The event once again will be held in conjunction with Temple Terrace Reads, a family literacy festival held adjacent to the fire station in front of Temple Terrace Elementary School from 9 a.m. to noon.
