WUSF May Go Off the Air

What are your thoughts on the prospect?

The University of South Florida’s Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to put the WUSF TV station on the auction block.

The station will now be a part of the Federal Communications Commission’s incentive broadcast spectrum auction, according to The Oracle. The auction, set for early next year, will enable the school to trade or sell off its broadcasting rights. The auction is meant to help free up broadcasting space for the growing demand for wireless mobile devices.

Whether the station will remain on the air after the auction is unclear. Going dark would provide USF the biggest payout, The Oracle noted, but other options include moving the broadcasts from a high quality UHF channel to a VHF channel or channel sharing, among others.

Should USF take the station off the air, it stands to make millions, several media outlets have reported. At present, the station is used little for academics, broadcasting a mix of PBS programs and shows like “Sewing With Nancy” and “Sit and Be Fit.”

The decision to put the TV station in the auction does not impact USF’s radio station.
