Centre for Girls Celebrates New Music Technology Program for Girls

Girls will be writing music, recording it and learning how to distribute their original work during the new school year at the Centre for Girls, thanks to a grant from AT&T.

The Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women announce that AT&T has awarded a $10,000 grant to create a music technology program at its Centre for Girls, 105 Sligh Ave.

The Centre for Girls is an enrichment and education center focused on the needs of Tampa Bay's girls, ages 5-14, and their families. The center provides innovative programming with a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) curriculum integrating health & wellness, and green living; all of which empower girls by teaching positive self-expression.

Sartura Smith, program director for The Centre for Girls, said the grant will enable the Centre for Girls to more effectively reach the girls from a technology-focused approach.

Through the grant funding, the girls will be given the opportunity to write, record and distribute their musical creations through the use of Microsoft Surface tablets, along with additional recording and software equipment. The program will use local volunteers and musical professionals to develop a structured music technology curriculum aimed to expose the girls to all aspects of music creation and the music industry.

Smith said the plan is to include graphic design, digital art, voice recording, music production, sound engineering, photo & video editing over the course of the school year to engage in team building, leadership and technology based activities.

AT&T and The Centre for Girls share their support of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics initiatives and together they will help provide Tampa Bay girls exposure to a broader world view through the gift of music technologies.

“Refining the process of STEM education through music makes it a fun process for students of all ages,” said Ed Narain, AT&T Florida regional director. “This STEM focused music program will inspire our youth to look at a career in this rewarding discipline that benefits our economy by providing the highly-trained engineers, scientists, and mathematicians it so desperately needs.”
