Georgia Patch Memorial Day Survey: What Are Your Plans?

GEORGIA — Memorial Day is right around the corner. Normally that means the start of BBQ and beach season, but this year is different due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms in Georgia throughout much of the weekend, so planning may be tough. Still, state parks are mostly open for the holiday weekend — with rules. Six feet of social distancing space must be maintained, and groups of 10 or more are discouraged.

Also discouraged is straying too far from home: On its website, Georgia's Department of Natural Resources urges residents to enjoy smaller nearby parks, thereby avoiding crowds at the larger more popular parks. Park staff may temporarily limit access to ensure social distancing and protect the health of the public and employees.

Beaches are officially open as well, but Governor Brian Kemp is allowing local governments to set their own rules as they see fit. Call ahead before you make plans.
