Small Earthquake Rattles GA; Did You Feel It?

The USGS confirmed a 2.4-magnitude earthquake was felt early Sunday in east-central Georgia. Did you feel it?

WILKES COUNTY — The United States Geological Survey confirmed a 2.4-magnitude earthquake was felt early Sunday in east-central Georgia. Officials said the earthquake happened at 12:17 a.m. with the epicenter in Wilkes County, 2.4 miles from Lincolnton.

The quake occurred 5 kilometers underground, the USGS said.

The location is about 35 miles west-northwest of Augusta, about 50 miles south-southeast of Athens, and about 105 miles east of Atlanta, Fox Atlanta reported.

Sunday's quake is at least the third earthquake recorded this year in Georgia and the second one this month.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office confirmed a 1.8-magnitude earthquake was felt Dec. 9 in northeast Forsyth County.

Sheriff Ron Freeman wrote on the department's Facebook page then, "Remember it's 2020, don't act like y'all are surprised. What's next a Blizcanenadoquake? Remember only 22 days left in this year."

In February a temblor was confirmed in Gwinnett County. The United States Geological Survey recorded a 2.3 magnitude earthquake near Lilburn. The quake had a depth of around three miles and was centered 18 miles northeast of Atlanta, according to the Center for Earthquake Research and Information at the University of Memphis.
