String Of GA Triple-Digit COVID Deaths Ends
As the coronavirus vaccine rollout continues, the nation reports more than 24 million cases and braces to eclipse toll of 400,000 deaths.
ATLANTA — For the past seven days Georgia has recorded the deadliest string of COVID-19 deaths. On Monday there were only 63 deaths, ending consecutive days of more than 100 deaths dating back to Jan. 11. All total, there have been 820 deaths since last Monday, and 11,095 people who died in Georgia since the pandemic began early last year.
The U.S. crossed an unwelcome threshold Monday, however, recording more than 24 million COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began early last year.
According to the Johns Hopkins University dashboard, the total number of confirmed cases was 24,041,339. The nation is on the cusp of a more grim benchmark, however, approaching 400,000 deaths at a total of 398,588, according to the dashboard.

While it took the nation just over 300 days to reach half that number of cases — roughly 12 million — U.S. case totals spiked to the second 12 million case in just 59 days.
Georgia’s total number of cases has reached 684,763 as of Monday, state public health officials report. There were 4,428 confirmed cases reported on Monday, excluding the antigen positive cases. As of 3 p.m. that day, 46,741 people have been hospitalized with the virus, including 122 confirmed hospitalizations.

Georgia is in Phase 1A+ of the coronavirus vaccine deployment, and those eligible include first responders, health care workers, long-term care facility residents and staff, and Georgians age 65 and older. Information about vaccination sites is available on the state public health department's vaccination locator tool. Appointments are required to receive the vaccine, and Georgians can go to any vaccination site in the state — not just the ones in their county of residence.
