A man allegedly stole 169 pounds of scrap copper from a home in the at 5400 block of Old Highway 41.
On June 2, Ruben Jim Broadus allegedly entered an unoccupied house used to keep scrap copper, according to an arrest warrant issued this week. The house is located on property owned by Atlas Disposal, Broadus' employer at the time.
Broadus allegedly took the copper, went to another residence, and asked his son-in-law and his mother to take the copper to a junkyard, Acworth police said.
The pair had no idea it was stolen, took it the junkyard and received $463.10 for the copper, police said.
"They denied knowing the copper was stolen and stated that the only reason they took it for Jim was because Jim owed (the son-in-law) money from a prior loan," according to the warrant. "On July 8, Broadus came in for an interview and stated that he acted alone in taking the copper."
He was arrested that day and charged with burglary. He remains in custody in lieu of $3,500 bond.
