Acworth Golf Course Attracts Amateur Tour Thanks to Winter Seeding

The course will be featured on The Golf Channel on March 13.

ACWORTH, GA -- The Cobblestone Golf Course will host the Golf Channel Amateur Tour on March 13, 2016.

During the 2014-15 winter season, General Manager Terry Harnage made the decision to overseed the fairways with winter rye, a fine-bladed grass that thrives in colder weather, provides a bright green backdrop for relaxing rounds of golf, and makes for a better playing experience.

Overseeded and mowed green fairways offer more consistent ball speeds than brown surfaces, and the winter rye helps the ball to sit up just a little. The course looks more inviting to golfers, especially those who play the sport as a way to get away from work and daily stressors.

“Some courses paint their fairways green in the winter to try to create the same environment, but we’ve found that for about the same cost, we can give our players real green grass fairways during the colder months. It’s a more conducive environment for golfing.” We’ve increased the rounds of play and have had many favorable comments from the players as well,” he noted.

“We were able to get the seed out over the course of two days and had very little impact on play. We started play on tee #1 the first day and began spreading seed on the back nine. Staying in front of play, we were able to finish 9 holes before play caught us. We did the same thing but on opposite sides the second day.”

“Weather plays a major impact on how frequently we mow the overseed. With good weather conditions and a dry golf course we would mow 3 times per week, which also gives the players the smell of fresh-mowed grass.”
