1,000 New Coronavirus Cases In GA, 524 Hospitalized In 5 Days
There are more than 1,000 new cases of the coronavirus in Georgia since Thursday, according to statistics released Friday.
ATLANTA, GA — There are more than 1,000 new cases of the coronavirus in Georgia since Thursday, according to statistics released Friday by the state’s health department, bringing the state's total to 62,009.
The Georgia Department of Public Health reported 31 additional coronavirus-related deaths since Thursday, raising the total number of deaths to 2,636 statewide.
As of Friday afternoon, 9,772 Georgians have been hospitalized, with 2,122 patients in the intensive care unit. For comparison, the state tracking site confirmed on June 14 that there were 57,681 cases of the coronavirus with 2,451 deaths and 9,248 hospitalizations.

That is an increase of 524 new hospitalizations in the past five days.
No information is available from Georgia about how many patients have recovered.

Georgia has tested 798,284 people so far, including both viral and antibody testing. So far, 63,526— or about 8 percent — have tested positive.
Counties in or near metro Atlanta continue to have the highest number of cases:
- Gwinnett County: 5,958 confirmed cases
- Fulton County: 5,400 confirmed cases
- DeKalb County: 4,637 confirmed cases
- Cobb County: 3,807 confirmed cases
- Hall County: 2,901 confirmed cases
Thursday's statistics also identify 886 cases of COVID-19 as from "unknown" counties, with 2,892 cases counted as "Non-Georgia Resident."
Counties in or near metro Atlanta also continue to have the highest number of deaths, with the exception of Dougherty County, the site of the state's first major outbreak and where Albany is the county seat.
- Fulton County: 304 deaths
- Cobb County: 229 deaths
- Gwinnett County: 161 deaths
- DeKalb County: 164 deaths
- Dougherty County: 151 deaths
Globally, more than 8.5 million cases of coronavirus have been confirmed, with more than 457,000 deaths, according to numbers tallied Thursday afternoon by Johns Hopkins. In the U.S., nearly 2.2 million people have been confirmed to have COVID-19, with 118,894 deaths confirmed as of Friday.
