Alpharetta Cops Clock Motorcycle at 178 MPH On Georgia 400

According to a social media post, officers didn't even try to stop a sportbike but alerted Atlanta police as super speeding continues.

ALPHARETTA, GA – An officer with the Alpharetta Police Department clocked a motorcyclist traveling 178 mph Sunday on Georgia 400 in a moving violation officers did not even attempt to stop.

The department posted a photo of a speed gun clocking a sport bike at the extreme high rate of speed on its Facebook page. The post indicated that the report of the motorcyclist and brief description was passed along to law enforcement in Atlanta.

“Hopefully, the driver of the sport bike matures a little bit before a tragedy happens,” read the post, which included the hashtag #SlowDown

A department spokesman did not immediately return an email seeking comment from Patch on Tuesday.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday that tickets for speeds exceeding 100 mph are up by two-thirds across the state from a year ago. State troopers wrote more than 140 tickets during a two-week period and Sandy Springs Police clocked a motorcyclist at 172 mph earlier this year as well. That incident also took place on Georgia 400 and a traffic stop was not attempted.

According to the report, the fine for speeding can be up to $1,000 but that fines can increase by $200 for super-speeding, which involves traveling faster than 75 mph on a two-lane road or faster than 85 mph on any road or highway.
