The May 19 meeting will start at 7 p.m. in Community Place, the small building beside City Hall at 2006 Heritage Walk. People may attend in person or virtually through Zoom at https://zoom.us/j/92858975812.

After approving minutes from its last two meetings, Nan Buckner will be introduced as the newest member of the Committee. An award-winning rider, trainer and equestrian-themed businesswoman, Buckner was named to the Equestrian Committee an April City Council meeting. Appointed by Council member Rick Mohrig, she assumes the position long held by Larry Covington.

The bulk of Wednesday’s meeting will be devoted to reports from committee members overseeing subcommittees.

For example, Julie Shannon and others will address developments at Birmingham Park. Earlier this month, the Equestrian Committee and Milton Land Conservancy jointly organized a successful “Volunteer Workday” at the City nature preserve. People spent much of a Saturday clearing trails, removing errant limbs, and doing more to improve Birmingham Park.

Wednesday’s discussion will touch on that and potential upcoming City investments in making the Park safer and better for human and horse visitors.

Committee member Brian Maloney will talk about efforts to use social media (and potentially print media) to engage and grow Milton’s equestrian community. Maloney, Equestrian Committee Chair Tony Rich and City Communications Director Greg Botelho have been working on a detailed plan to share human interest stories, relevant news updates and interesting information. The goal is to have more and more people feel connected with, and care about, Milton’s equestrian community – whether or not they ride horses.

Parts of this effort, like the “Barn of the Month” feature, has already begun on the City of Milton’s Facebook page. Other elements should roll out in the coming months.

Lastly, Committee member Chrissy Reeves will provide an update on the latest in efforts to encourage and support farm ownership in Milton.

After Wednesday’s meeting, the Milton Equestrian Committee is next scheduled to convene on June 16.
