For about three weeks starting July 12, the eastern leg of Thompson Road should be closed at Hopewell -- a temporary detour to allow a new roundabout there to be completed about three months early.

The expedited work plan and detour comes on the heels of a similar strategy deployed at Hopewell and Hamby roads, where another TSPLOST-funded roundabout opened last week about four months earlier than expected. Crews there were able to drastically speed up their operations by closing Hamby Road for three weeks. That's what will be done again, but this time for Thompson Road.

Those with houses off Thompson Road, or in adjacent neighborhoods, will have access to Thompson via Francis Road. Similarly, visitors can reach Bell Memorial Park via Thompson Road. However, people won't be able to get to the park - or to impacted Thompson Road homes -- by crossing over Hopewell Road. Given that, please give yourself extra time if you have any plans in the affected area.

Electronic message boards, as well as detour signs, should be placed strategically around the area soon to alert drivers about the upcoming changes. Cars should be able to move north-south along Hopewell Road during this detour, though there may be some sporadic delays.

The majority of this work should be completed, and Thompson Road should reopen in full, by August 2. This is to ensure that there will be no traffic disruption before schools return to session. And this workable 3-week detour means that drivers will have three fewer months of intermittent single-lane closures due to ongoing work. Officially, both this and the Hopewell-Hamby roundabouts had to be finished by December 31, 2021.
