Funeral Scheduled For Thursday To Honor Cyclist Who Died Following Accident

Jason Young, 42, passed away last week from injuries following a traffic accident in Milton.

Friends and relatives on Thursday will say goodbye to the cyclist who passed away over the weekend from injuries he sustained in an accident.

Visitation for Jason Young will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7 at North Point Community Church in Alpharetta. A celebration of life service will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at the same location.

North Point Community Church is at 4350 North Point Parkway. According to the CaringBridge account set up in honor of Young, residents can also make contributes to the family using two methods: the Jason Young Final Expenses Fund and the Young Children’s Education Fund.

Young, 42, died Saturday, May 2 after he was hit by a truck along Freemanville Road in Milton.

Milton police have charged Jasper resident John Blankenship, 46, with vehicular homicide in the April 29 accident, which occurred around 7:36 p.m.

According to investigators and information from the scene, Blankenship, the driver of a white 1993 Ford Ranger pickup truck, was traveling northbound on Freemanvile Road while five cyclists were traveling southbound on the same road.

In an attempt to pass another vehicle in front of him, Blankenship allegedly crossed over into the southbound lane and hit two of the five cyclists, police said.

The other cyclists crashed as a result of the accident. Two of the cyclists were transported to the hospital.

According to his obituary, Young worked as senior account manager at Windstream Communications. He was born in Atlanta on Feb. 3, 1970, and was an “avid athlete.” As a child, he raced dirt bikes, played soccer and also enjoyed wrestling.

As an adult, he loved to rock climb and also ran in marathons, competed in triathlons and cycling races. Additionally, he coached distance and cross-country teams at Sequoyah High School and also coached track for the Sequoyah Junior Chiefs.

A member of Watermarke Church, Young is survived by wife, Meri Beth Young; daughters, Hannah and Sara; son, Jake; mother, Voncyle Linthicum of Tallahassee, Florida; father, D. Jackson (Jack) Young, and step mother, Charlotte, of High Point, North Carolina; brother, James Young (Dana) of Austin, Texas; brother John (Hope) Young of Temple, Texas; sister, Valorie Stevens of Tallahassee, Florida; and his aunts, nephews and his mother-in-law and father-in-law.
