Milton High School Graduates Win Georgia-Pacific Scholarship

Two recent Milton High School graduates have been selected as recipients of a Georgia-Pacific Foundation Employees' Children Scholarship.

MILTON, GA — Two recent graduates of Milton High School have been selected as recipients of a Georgia-Pacific Foundation Employees’ Children Scholarship. Virginia Schreiber and Aidan McHugh are among 50 students nationwide awarded the scholarships, which provide $2,000 per year for up to four years of undergraduate study.

Schreiber’s mother, Heather, and McHugh’s father, Sean, both work at Georgia-Pacific’s Atlanta headquarters. Schreiber and McHugh each earned the Georgia Certificate of Merit and are members of the National Honor Society. Schreiber lettered in three sports - cheerleading, Cirque, and gymnastics - and graduated with honors. McHugh was vice president and trumpet section leader for the marching band, a soloist in the wind ensemble and jazz band, and a four-year All-State trumpet participant.

Schreiber plans to study Industrial Design at Georgia Tech. McHugh will attend University of Notre Dame with plans to study political science and economics as well as join the marching and concert bands.

Schreiber's mother says the hardest part about the COVID-19 shutdown was the cancellation of the spring Cirque performances. Milton is the only public high school in the country with a circus arts as part of its curriculum, and Virginia has been a member of the performance company for three years and was leading an act with an apparatus she helped to design.

McHugh's father says, like all of his classmates, McHugh missed out on planned senior activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic and spent much of his time as an essential employee at Kroger earning money for college.

“The COVID-19 shutdown has cost these young people a huge part of their educational experience,” said Curley M. Dossman, Jr., president of the Georgia-Pacific Foundation. “It is vital that we continue to support their academic success and remind them that their futures remain bright.”

Since the scholarship program began in 1988, Georgia-Pacific has awarded nearly 1,600 scholarships totaling nearly $13 million. The program is administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and is open to children of all active, full-time, U.S.-based employees of Georgia-Pacific. About 300 applications were received this year.

Education is a cornerstone of Georgia-Pacific’s community investment. Across the country, the company supports a wide array of public school and community based educational programs. Investment support includes programs that boost literacy, promote STEM and STEAM interest and train educators to take their skills to the next level of teaching and learning.
