ALPHARETTA, GA — Alpharetta has opened the northern portion of the Big Creek Greenway extension. The new segment of the 14-mile trail has been under construction since February 2020.

Although the new Greenway segment, which runs from the Marconi Drive trailhead to Union Hill Park and McGinnis Ferry Road, is open for use, the public is advised that some minor construction activity will continue through July.

“Our contractor is working on the final electrical connections now, so the lights in the pedestrian tunnel under Windward Parkway and the lights for the pedestrian crossing at Union Hill Road may not be operating for the first couple of days,” said Alpharetta Public Works Director Pete Sewczwicz. “Between now and the end of July they will be working on punch list items, things that we have identified that are not quite completed or finished in the way that they should be, and other minor detail work.”

One of the two segments of phase five opening June 3 will extend the Greenway from the intersection of Kelly Mill Road and Johnson Road to Canton Highway, known as Ga. 20, a distance of 2.27 miles.

The other segment of phase five opening on Thursday originates at the intersection of Ga. 20 and the Spot Road Connector. That segment travels along the Spot Road Connector, Doc Bramblett Road and Spot Road, ending at the Sawnee Mountain Preserve and Visitor Center, a distance of 2.48 miles.

In the future, an additional one-mile segment of phase five will run parallel to Ga. 20, connecting all portions of the Greenway. This segment will be constructed at a later date as part of the planned Georgia Department of Transportation widening of Canton Highway.

When complete, phase five of the Greenway will extend the multi-use trail an additional 5.7 miles from Kelly Mill Road to the Sawnee Mountain Preserve Visitor Center, 4075 Spot Road, making the entire Forsyth County Big Creek Greenway just over 16.5 miles in length.
