ACC Leisure Services Department Receives Georgia Recreation and Park Association Awards

The Athens-Clarke County Department of Leisure Services was recently honored with several state awards by the Georgia Recreation and Park Association during its annual conference at Jekyll Island. The Department received awards recognizing outstanding programs, publications, and volunteers.

The Lyndon House Arts Center received the Arts and Humanities Award for its “Roy G. Biv 8.2” exhibit. The exhibit was made possible through a partnership with the Athens-Clarke County Library and the Institute of Museums and Library Services.
The Department received two awards for publications showing outstanding creativity and visual appeal. They included the Summer Camp Parent Handbook and a brochure promoting July is Park and Recreation Month.

For the second consecutive year, the Department received the Innovative Camp Award. This year Rocksprings Park’s “Super Heroes Camp” was selected for utilizing super hero concepts to provide dynamic experiences promoting health, mentoring and wellness for campers to become community super heroes themselves.

The Department’s volunteers were also honored for their services. The Southern Off Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) was chosen as the “Outdoor Section Volunteer Award” for their work on the mountain bike trails at Trail Creek Park. Bear Hollow Zoo volunteer Sherrie Hines was the recipient of the Programmers Section Volunteer Award.

Earlier this month, the Department was recognized by GRPA’s District 7, which encompasses Northeast Georgia, with two awards. SORBA was honored with the Volunteer Award and the Department was presented with the Agency Award for populations of 50,001 and larger. The Agency award is awarded based on major accomplishments, staff development opportunities, outstanding programs, and technology integration.
