Fresh from the Farm: West Broad Street Farmers Market Opens on Saturday

The market will also include musical entertainment, children's activities and workshops.

More than 20 vendors selling fresh produce, eggs, honey, crafts, soaps and other food items will gather this Saturday, July 6, as the West Broad Farmers Market opens for the season. 

The market will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first Saturday of every month at the old West Broad School at 1573 W. Broad St. in Athens. Market organizers hope to promote local growers and building a neighborhood-based economy in the Hancock Corridor community. 

But Saturday's market isn't just about fresh foods and hand-crafted wares, check out this schedule of events: 

  • 10 to 11 a.m. — Welcome and musical entertainment by Tonalli, a Mexican folklore dance group 
  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Children's activities featuring performers from Canopy Studio, arts and crafts activities around Healthy Hearts, "Young Doctor" activities where children can use stethoscopes and take pulses 
  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Blood pressure screenings 
  • 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. — Sustainable gardening workshop: Composting with the Master Composters 
  • 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. — Next Top Chef competition, a cooking activity for children ages 6 to 12 
  • 11 to 11:30 a.m. — Health workshop: Healthy Hearts by St. Mary's Hospital 
  • 11:30 to noon — Cooking demonstration: Cooking with Ms. Yvonne, collard greens salad
