Town & Gown Players present The Illusion
The Illusion, Tony Kushner's brilliant comic adaptation of Pierre Corneille's 17th century L'Illusion Comique (Theatrical Illusion)

The play involves a cantankerous old man having second thoughts about the son he banished many years before. Feeling his life ebbing away, he hies to the cave of a powerful magician for help finding his son. Conjuring with the help of his servant, (who carries his amputated tongue around in a jar - yet magically, is sometimes able to speak), the magician calls forth images of the son in three different romantic misadventures, each one more ominous than the one before. Eventually, catastrophe ensues, but don’t worry…remember the play’s title. The magician’s ruse is revealed at the climax of the play during a moment that explains everything, yet seems to tell us nothing.
In the end, one character considers the mysteries of the moon, wanting to fly there. No more than that. We are left without lucidity or rationality, only theatricality. But after all, what more can we expect from an illusion?
