UGA's Elijah Holyfield Arrested For Marijuana Possession

UGA student-athlete Elijah Holyfield, son of local boxing legend Evander Holyfield, arrested on drug charges.

ATHENS, GA -- Georgia running back Elijah Holyfield, the son of local boxing legend Evander Holyfield, was arrested Monday morning in Athens, police said. A residence assistant reportedly smelled marijuana coming from the student-athlete's dormitory room around midnight and called police.

Holyfield, 19, was charged with use of drug-related objects and of marijuana possession, less than an ounce, according to Athens-Clarke County jail records.

Holyfield was in jail for less than an hour, being arrested just after 3 a.m. and bonding out a little after 4 a.m. on $4,050 bond.

Police officer Jacob Herndon showed up to the dorm and could “immediately smell” marijuana, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

“I advised Holyfield that I could smell the odor of burning marijuana coming from his room and asked if they had been smoking. He stated that he had not and did know what I was talking about,” the officer reportedly wrote. “Holyfield stated that he was sitting on the couch watching TV while his roommates were asleep.”

Holyfield's eyes were reportedly bloodshot red, causing the officer to investigate. The student was detained shortly after that.

Holyfield, who is from Atlanta, lettered at Woodward Academy before coming to UGA as a backup running back. In 2016, he saw limited action on the field and has been slowed by injuries.

Holyfield's father, Evander, nicknamed "The Real Deal," is the only four-time world heavyweight champion in boxing.
