3 Face Trial In Killing Of Mayoral Candidate's Nephew

Jury selection began Monday; the shooting victim was mistaken for a gang member, says top prosecutor.

ATLANTA, GA — Jury selection began Monday for the trial of three people charged in the 2014 shooting death of the nephew of Atlanta mayoral candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms, Fulton County's top prosecutor announced. The three are facing felony murder and other charges, said District Attorney Paul Howard Jr.

On June 13, 2014, a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Darius Bottoms was ambushed on Legacy Drive in Southwest Atlanta, and he died after being shot in the head. A police investigation determined that Bottoms had been mistaken for a rival gang member, Howard said.

A passenger in his vehicle escaped injury. The police arrested Rashad Barber, 19; Ryan Bowdery, 23; and David Dajunta Wallace, 22, who were indicted in February 2015 for felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, participation in criminal street gang activity, and criminal damage to property in the first and second degree.

Keisha Lance Bottoms is running against Mary Norwood in Tuesday's runoff election for mayor of Atlanta.
