Black Ice Now The Danger From Weakening Winter Storm

Metro Atlanta has seen little snow from what was once called a major winter storm, but falling temperatures tonight could bring new threats.

PEACHTREE CITY, GA -- A winter weather advisory was cancelled earlier than expected on Tuesday, but the National Weather Service is now warning against the possibility of black ice, as temperatures are predicted to fall well below freezing Tuesday night. The advisory was expected to last through 7 pm, but was cancelled around noon, as what was once expected to be a major winter storm had all but dissipated.

Much of metro Atlanta experienced light rain Tuesday morning, as temperatures remained well above freezing ahead of a cold front that slowed as it approached metro Atlanta. The winter weather advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, went into effect at 3 am Tuesday, but now many local meteorologists are now predicting no appreciable snow accumulations in metro Atlanta.

National Weather Service forecasters are now calling for clearing skies Tuesday night, followed by the coldest temperatures of the year Tuesday night, well into the low 20s.
