UPDATE: During a press conference at Public Safety Headquarters today, July 1, 2021, Police Chief Rodney Bryant identified the wounded officer as Officer Khuong Thai who was sworn in as an Atlanta Police Officer in October 2019. Second officer involved has been identified as Officer Joshua Lovreta who was sworn in October 2011. The deceased suspect was identified as Joseph Lee Humbles, age 29. The investigation into this incident is continuing.

Preliminary Statement:  

On June 30th, 2021 at approximately 1pm, Atlanta Police responded to a call of shots fired at 710 Peachtree St.  Upon arrival, officers entered the building and approached the area of the reported shooting. At that time, the officers immediately took gunfire from an adult male suspect. The officers were able to return fire, striking the suspect, who succumbed to his injuries. 

One officer sustained multiple apparent gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital alert, conscious, and breathing, and is in stable condition. 

The ongoing investigation has revealed that the suspect was involved in a shooting with another male at the location before police arrival. That male sustained non-life threatening injuries and investigators are working to determine the circumstances of the original shooting.

The GBI has responded to the scene and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
