Fleeing Dorian, Dozens Of Pets, Animals Arrive In Atlanta

ATLANTA — Dozens of dogs and cats made their way from central Florida to the Atlanta Humane Society over the weekend to escape the path of Hurricane Dorian. The animals were already in the shelter before Dorian and are not stray or lost animals who might have been picked up during evacuations.

The 40 cats were from Suwanee County Animal Shelter in McAlpin, Florida. Some in this group have medical issues and Humane Society doctors will be providing them with specialized medical care.

The eight dogs were from Taylor County, Florida. Six are heartworm positive and will require specialized medical care and treatment before becoming available for adoption.

The Taylor County shelter is a small, rural shelter without many resources. It has indoor space for dogs but have asked for assistance with the dogs because they are currently so full inside, they have been forced to house these dogs outside.

The Atlanta Humane Society has a disaster response team in place in times of disaster. The team works closely with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and other designated disaster relief agencies and provide resources during times of great need. They also collaborate with local and national animal welfare groups to coordinate the transport of animals from disaster zones and on-site support in disaster zones if needed. Last year, the Society's disaster response team helped 208 animals during hurricane season.
