Free Pets: Where To Adopt On Clear The Shelters Day In Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA — Adoption fees will be waived at many animal shelters on Saturday, Aug. 18, around the Atlanta metro for the fourth annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption drive. The event sponsored by NBC helps shelters nationwide find permanent and loving homes for homeless animals during a time of year when adoptions are needed.

While shelters will waive adoption fees on all pets available, regular adoption requirements will apply. Plan to bring a photo ID and any other necessary paperwork to qualify to adopt.

The Atlanta Humane Society says it has waived fees on adoptions of all animals 6 months and older, "so if you've been thinking about adopting, today is the day. Join us in this nationwide initiative with hundreds of shelters across the country and dozens of NBC affiliates to adopt thousands of waiting dogs and cats into their forever, loving homes."

Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement is also taking part in the event. Dogs and cats adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped.

"We're not at capacity, but we don't want to be at capacity," said Animal Welfare and Enforcement Manager Alan Davis. "This will help ensure we have adequate space should we have a surge in pickups or have a hoarding case, which could happen at any time."

Cobb County Animal Services

• Hours for Adoption and Reclaim: (Closed on Mondays and holidays); Tuesday - Saturday 9:30am - 5:30pm; Sunday 2pm - 5pm

Forsyth County Animal Shelter

• 4065 County Way, Cumming
• Hours: 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Best Friends Animal Society
