Former president and first lady Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were married in 1946 in their hometown of Plains.
ATLANTA, GA — Saturday will be a special day for Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter. The former president and first lady will celebrate their 72nd wedding anniversary, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The Carters plan to celebrate their anniversary privately, a spokesperson told the AJC. It's a break in their busy schedule, which includes international relief projects with the Carter Center and with Habitat for Humanity, the nonprofit group that builds homes for needy families.
The couple married on July 7, 1946, at a church in their hometown of Plains. As the AJC relates: "He was 21 and just out of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. She was 18 and literally the girl next door," as their two families lived besides each other when she was born.
