Patch Tastemaker: Beer Journalist Austin L. Ray
Where are the best spots to get funky ales and fancy eats in Atlanta? This beer advocate and Edgewood resident has all the answers.

Award-winning journalist Austin L. Ray is the author behind several essays based on his wide-ranging passions, from loud music to standup comedy. However, it is beer that stands at the forefront of his impressive journalistic endeavors.
In addition to his freelance writing for publications including Rolling Stone and Atlanta Magazine, Ray is the editorial director of Good Beer Hunting, "a critical, creative and curious voice in the world of beer" which aims to create a better future for craft breweries, big and small.
The beer connoisseur's job allows him to visit some of his Atlanta's finest establishments to sample their best pints. But Ray's love for his home city extends beyond his favorite local brews. "We’re a weird, growing, diverse place that’s doing it’s best to keep up with the madness," he remarks.

How long have you lived in Atlanta? I moved to Atlanta in 2005 for an internship at a magazine, but had my sights set on New York City, because that’s where all writers in their twenties think they have to live. I quickly realized ATL was home, and haven’t looked back since.
What neighborhood do you live in? I live in Edgewood, which is mostly known for being close to other, cooler neighborhoods. But all that’s changing, and it’s becoming a coveted spot. I love my neighborhood.
What’s your occupation? I work as a writer and editor on Mailchimp’s marketing team, and Editorial Director of Good Beer Hunting. When I can find the time, I do some freelance work for places like Rolling Stone, Atlanta Magazine and more.
Describe Atlanta in three words: Underestimated, influential, dynamic
What’s your favorite overall Atlanta restaurant? Hooboy, this is a tough one. Depending on my mood, it’s either Ticonderoga Club, Kimball House or Gaja.
Best Italian food: BoccaLupo
Best pizza: Ammazza, which is finally coming back soon.
Best spot for a quick lunch: 8Arm
Best spot for a romantic date: Watchman’s
Best Sunday brunch: Home grown
Best cup of coffee: Spiller Park
Best craft cocktail: Ticonderoga Club
Best Brewery: Wrecking Bar Brewpub has done an incredible job in its seven years of evolving into one of the finest food and drink destinations in the Southeast. From their house-made beers — which include everything from IPAs to funky, wild ales to English Milds to Pilsners to barrel-aged Stouts — to their fancy and reasonably-priced eats, it's no wonder I go there more often than anywhere in Atlanta. Plus, they run a farm that supplies a lot of their veggies and a CSA for locals.
What hotel would you recommend for your out of town guests? You have to stay at the legendary and just-remodeled Hotel Clermont. The design is sharp, the food at Tiny Lou’s is solid and the Clermont Lounge still strives underneath it all.
Favorite charity event or organization: The Giving Kitchen is an amazing organization that helps out folks in the food industry. Their work is so inspiring to me.
Favorite cultural event: The Atlanta Mess-Around is a yearly rock ‘n’ roll festival in East Atlanta that turns into a neighborhood-wide party. It’s like Coachella for punk rock.
Favorite cultural institution: OutKast
What’s the best museum or current exhibit in Atlanta? The High Museum of Art always impresses me, and they recently added Killer Mike to their board.
Best historic or iconic Atlanta landmark to see or explore: The Center for Civil Rights is a must-visit.
The best aspect of Atlanta is: We’re a weird, growing, diverse place that’s doing it’s best to keep up with the madness. I love that you can drive 15 minutes in just about any direction and run into a majestic green space. But most of all, I’m excited about our potential.
