Reward Grows for Tips in Home Invasion Shooting

The family of Jonathan Alex Newton will hold a candlelight vigil for him Thursday.

ATLANTA, GA — Donations from the friends and family of a shooting victim from McDuffie County have raised the reward for tips in the case to $25,000, according to Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta.

The victim, 30-year-old Jonathan Alex Newton, came home for lunch on Oct. 31 at his apartment at the East Atlanta Village, 1205 Metropolitan Ave., when he found that a burglar had broken in. They got into a fight, and then the burglar shot Newton and fled.

Newton died at the scene. The Atlanta police have identified a suspect in the shooting, but he remains at large. They also have released a video of the individual on YouTube.

Initially, Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta posted a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the individual's arrest. Donations from family and friends raised that total to $25,000.

Newton grew up in Thomson, a small town near Augusta, and moved to Atlanta to work for a construction company. His family plans to hold a candlelight vigil Thursday in Atlanta in his memory, according to WRDW-TV.

Last week, family and friends gathered to remember "Alex" before his funeral on Saturday in Thomson.
