AJ Battles to Join in the Ride for Kids

Local brain tumor patient readies for the Atlanta Ride for Kids

AJ is 11 years old and he was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis (NF for short) when he was 6 months old. NF causes tumors to grow anywhere in your body where there are nerves. AJ has been a fighter his entire life. AJ was completely non-verbal until he was about 4 years old, now he'll talk your ear off, if you let him. AJ didn't walk until he was 2 years old; he has a leg length discrepancy. He also has scoliosis. He does not let any of this stop him though. He is such a fighter! AJ has had more MRI's than can be counted, 8 surgeries, and 2 PET scans. He is currently on chemotherapy to help shrink the plexiform tumor that involves his left leg, his colon, his intestines, and his spine. Through all of this, AJ does not let anything slow him down one bit. AJ is always thinking of others. He is an awesome kid who has such a zest for life, he loves to laugh and to make others smile, he has the most tender heart, and most of the time, you can find him lost in a good book or watching funny you-tube videos.

It’s for Stars like AJ that we ride in the Atlanta Ride for Kids. We take the Stars and their families out for an hour long, carefree ride for them to forget their daily battle, if, for only just a short time. We also use this opportunity to raise awareness and much needed money for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) is the world's largest nonprofit funder of research into cures for childhood brain tumors. PBTF has funded more than $28 million to date, supporting the best and brightest at institutions nationwide. For families battling the deadliest form of childhood cancer, PBTF provides hope, educational resources, scholarships, financial aid and opportunities to meet other families.
