Woman Accused Of Running Over Police Officer Is Under Arrest

Jessica Fox, 28, faces charges including assault and battery on a police officer.

STATHAM, GA — The woman police say ran over an officer and dragged him with her car as he was trying to arrest her is in custody and facing a host of charges.

Jessica Fox, 28, was placed into custody Tuesday at the Barrow County Sheriff's Office.

According to a news release, Barrow County sheriff's deputies received information that Fox, who had been wanted for a probation violation on previous drug charges, was staying at a residence in Barrow County.

Upon confirming she was there, deputies took her into custody without incident.

On Saturday, Officer Marc Lofton of the Statham Police Department made a traffic stop on Dooley Town Road at about 5:08 p.m.

As a result of the stop, Lofton attempted to arrest Fox, according to Statham Police Chief Allan Johnston.

Fox physically resisted arrest, Johnston said in a statement posted on Facebook, and, during the struggle, put her car back into drive and began to drive off.

Lofton, who had attempted to subdue Fox using his Taser, got entangled with the car, on which the driver's side door was still open, and was dragged across Dooley Town Road.

Fox then ran over both of Lofton's legs with the back left wheel of the 2010 Pontiac G6, Johnston said in the statement.

Because of the nature of the alleged crime, Statham Police had asked the Barrow sheriff's office to take the lead on the search for Fox.

"Anytime one of your officers are hurt, especially to the degree Lofton was, there are emotions involved," Johnston said in a follow-up post. "While I felt positive that our guys were professional enough to handle it, I did not wish to put them through that."

Lofton sustained a concussion and torn Achilles tendon as a result of the attack.

New arrest warrants being issued for Fox include speeding, failure to yield, driving on a suspended license, giving false name and birth date to law enforcement, fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, aggravated battery on a police officer and aggravated assault on a police officer.
