Georgia's Richest Zip Code Might Surprise You

Find out the richest neighborhood in Georgia, as well as the richest in metro Atlanta — they're not the same — and how they rank in the U.S.

ATLANTA, GA — It might not be surprising to learn that Buckhead and other parts of northwest Atlanta make up the metro area's richest community. But to find the wealthiest spot in Georgia, and one of the richest in the nation, you need to head to the coast.

Bloomberg recently evaluated IRS data to come up with the nation's priciest communities. The most expensive in Georgia? Sea Island (30561), on the southeast Georgia coast.

The privately-owned resort island about 60 miles south of Savannah is a frequent vacation destination for celebrities and home to lots of pro golfers and other well-heeled professionals. Bloomberg ranked it as the 6th-richest zip code in the South and the 39th-richest in the nation.

Meanwhile, in metro Atlanta, it's probably no surprise to anyone who has driven through Tuxedo Park that Buckhead is the richest zip code (30327) on this end of the state. Bloomberg ranked it the 10th-richest in the South and No. 62 in the United States.

Average income on Sea Island is a whopping $531,100 on Sea Island and $453,700 in the Buckhead area, according to Bloomberg.

The most expensive home currently on the market in Sea Island is going for a cool $9.8 million, according to Realtor.com, while the cheapest is a two-bedroom condo that will still run you $785,000.

In 30327, the top-end home will set you back $14.7 million, while you can slip into the neighborhood — albeit in a one-bedroom condo that "needs everything" — for just $95,000.

So what's the richest ZIP code in America? That would be Fisher Island, near Miami Beach, Florida. The average income there was $2.5 million in 2015.
