Benjamin Latham, 17, has been awarded the highest rank you can achieve in the Boy Scouts of America, that of the Eagle. Latham, a member of Troop 25-chartered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, took it upon himself to see what could be done to help the Jones Middle School library of which he was a student at years ago. Latham spoke with the head of the media center, Maile Steimer, who explained the need for the new bookshelves. “We needed bookshelves that were mobile and could change as the needs of the library changed,” said Steimer. He set to work with the help of a professional tradesmen to design a bookshelf that would meet the criteria Ms. Steimer had explained.

Latham, who has been involved in the scouting program for the last ten years, had never taken on a project of such magnitude as this before and ended up doing many new things along the way. “I saw him gain confidence to do hard things in the real world,” said his mother, Carrie Latham, “and we couldn’t be prouder.” After many hours of planning, sanding, nailing, cutting and painting, all with the help of many volunteers, the needed bookshelves were approved and gladly received by the school.
