According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, Arbor Day in the state was first declared in December 1890 by the General Assembly. The day was designated as the third Friday in February.
While National Arbor Day is the third Friday in April, it is too warm at that time of the year to plant trees in Georgia, the commission states. Experts state planting should take place between November and mid-March, as it provides a better chance that the trees will be established before the summer heat.
