Canton-based business builds Habitat home for single mom
Schoen Insulation Services helps neighbors receive a hand up.

In August, Stephen Schoen, President and CEO of Schoen Insulation Services, joyously passed the keys to her new home over to the Hadiatou Diallo. Schoen Insulation Services has provided nearly $850,000 and thousands of hours in volunteer labor over the past 10 years to build homes in partnership with Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia and qualified families. The Diallo home is the eleventh Habitat home in ten years to be sponsored and built by SIS and its employees. Schoen said, “This team building opportunity not only mobilizes our employees to serve in the community, but it offers Hadiatou and her family a hand up to a better quality of life while providing a decent, affordable home for her children to grow.”
Hadiatou grew up in Guinea on the West African Coast. She was able to come to the United States in 2010 and became a naturalized citizen in 2017. Hadiatou has worked night shift for several years so that she can spend quality time with her children before and after school. Moving into her new home will provide stability and security with the opportunity of switching to a day-shift position and better schools for her and the children.
In order to become a Habitat homeowner, families must qualify through an application process where they have to demonstrate a need, meet strict income guidelines, and pass rigorous background and credit checks. Once selected and approved as a partner family, they also provide 200 hours of “sweat equity” by working on their home and the other partner families’ homes.

Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia CEO, Russ Hayes stated, “It is only through our dedicated partners such as Schoen Insulation Services that we are able to provide families in need with affordable, safe, and sustainable shelter.” Additional sponsors on this home were ADP and The UPS Foundation. Both provided funding and volunteers to help complete the home.

About Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia
Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia is a non-profit, Christian housing ministry that builds affordable housing for purchase by low- to moderate-income families who demonstrate a capacity for responsible homeownership. Since its inception in 1995, Habitat-NCG has built or rehabbed over 310 homes in North Fulton, Cherokee and Forsyth/Dawson counties. Partner families are required to attend educational classes related to homeownership and perform 200 sweat equity hours; they earn between 30% and 60% of the Atlanta area median income and purchase their homes through a 30-year, no-interest loan financed by Habitat-NCG. In 2014, Habitat-NCG started a home repair program targeted primarily at veterans and seniors. To date, 65 repair projects have been completed, bringing the total number of persons served by the ministry to over 1373, including more than 800 children.
