Canton Police Kick Off 'LOCK IT UP' Campaign

A message reminding residents to secure their valuables will be posted at 9 p.m. each night on the agency's Facebook and Instagram pages.

CANTON, GA — Any member of a law enforcement agency will tell you that most incidents of theft and property damage occur while most of us are tucked into our beds, resting up for another day's work.

Unfortunately, in many of these cases, vehicles, sheds, and garages are left unlocked by the owners, providing thieves with the perfect opportunity to make off with your hard-earned possessions. Suspects try doors until they find one unlocked and then rummage through the vehicle, shed or garage to take any valuables they can find.

To help prevent these types of crimes, the Canton Police Department on Wednesday, Dec. 5 will roll out its "It’s 9 O’clock - LOCK IT UP” campaign. At 9 p.m. each night, a message will go out on the agency's Instagram and Facebook accounts reminding all our followers that "It’s 9 O’clock – LOCK IT UP."

This message will give you the perfect chance to make sure your garage doors and sheds are locked, vehicles are secure and free of visible values, and your bicycles are secured in a padlocked facility or to an immovable object. You'll also be encouraged to look around your property to see if there's anything that could draw the attention of a thief. Locking up one's possessions will greatly reduce the chances of these items being taken, Canton PD states.

"We strongly believe this initiative is another excellent avenue to continue to improve our communication, partnership and trust with those we serve," the Police Department added. "As always, thank you for your support as we all work together to continue to improve the quality of life in our great city."
