CCSD Makes Decision About Jan 17 Classes

CANTON, GA — Based on the forecast released by the National Weather Service calling for additional snow accumulation, the Cherokee County School District will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 17, the system said.

The system made the decision to cancel classes and close offices due to the inevitable icy road conditions from the winter precipitation, "prolonged sub-zero temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills" expected to move into the area tonight and Wednesday, said spokesperson Barbara Jacoby.

Cherokee Charter Academy also announced on its Facebook page that it will cancel classes and close its offices on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Chattahoochee Technical College and Reinhardt University will also close offices and cancel all classes for Wednesday.

All Cherokee County government offices will be closed, as will the Cherokee County Tax Commissioner's Office.

The Winter Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service is in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday. Snow is moving into the area, so residents should plan on slippery road conditions and reduced visibilities. Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch are expected, with locally higher amounts possible.

A Wind Chill Advisory is also in effect until 1 p.m. Wednesday, and you should expect wind chills to range anywhere from 25 above zero to 5 below zero degrees. The weather service states winds will become strong and gusty Wednesday, with northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph gusting to 25 to 30 mph. The cold wind chills will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin.
