The Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency on Tuesday joined forces with the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce to host a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday for the new Veterans Park.

The park will be situated on roughly 149 acres on Cumming Highway in the Macedonia community. An $11.7 million construction contract was awarded by the Cherokee County Commission at its Jan. 19 meeting to Suwanee-based Reeve's Young, Inc. for phase one of the project.

The project, including property acquisition, design and the first phase of construction, is funded by proceeds from the November 2008 voter approved Parks Bond.

Components of the first phase include two natural grass athletic fields, an artificial turf athletic field, two tennis courts, two pickleball courts, a playground, a skate park, two paved walking paths (1/3 mile near playground & 1 1/3 miles around the park) and concession/restroom buildings along with all the associated interior park roads and parking as well as a maintenance facility.

Also included in the first phase is a large open meadow with space allowed for a future memorial recognizing the service and sacrifice of our military veterans.

Possible additions for the future include a baseball/softball complex, additional tennis and pickleball courts, a large community pavilion and a recreation center along with added parking for each feature. Construction of future phases will depend on when additional funding becomes available, however.

With more than 75 acres for active use, Cherokee Veterans Park will be one of the largest active parks in Cherokee County. By comparison, Hobgood Park has less than 40 developed acres and JJ Biello Park has about 60 acres developed for active use.
