Cherokee Schools Make Weather Decision For Jan. 29

CANTON, GA — The Cherokee County School District has joined the lineup of other systems around metro Atlanta and North Georgia in closing its offices and canceling classes for Tuesday, Jan. 29.

CCSD said that it's decision to shut down operations is due to the "forecasts for possible inclement weather."

"We will continue to monitor conditions tomorrow to determine if further action is needed," the system said.

Parts of metro Atlanta and north Georgia, including Cherokee, are now included in a Winter Weather Advisory for 3 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29. According to the National Weather Service, total snow accumulations will be up to one and half-inch along and north of Carollton, Marietta and Canton. Snow-covered roads and limited visibility are expected, and drivers are strongly encouraged to stay off the roads if possible.

"Lesser amounts of snow are likely right along the Interstate 85 corridor," NWS states in its message. "In addition, any moisture left on the roadways, especially in sheltered or protected areas will likely refreeze, increasing the potential for black ice development."

Other closures around the area include Atlanta Public Schools, Cobb and Marietta, Bartow, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton and Paulding County schools. Cherokee Charter Academy, Reinhardt University and Chattahoochee Technical College are also closed for Tuesday, Jan. 29. Reinhardt Director of Marketing and Communications Erika Neldner said a planned Board of Trustees meeting has been postponed, and the second annual Scholarship Luncheon will be rescheduled.

Cherokee County government offices (including the Justice Center), Cherokee County Tax Commissioner's Office, the county's CATS bus service and the Cherokee County Health Department offices will also be closed. Holly Springs Municipal Court's session scheduled for Jan. 29 has been rescheduled to 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12.
