Cherokee Students Receive All-Metro Honors From Atlanta Track Club
The students were among 42 runners honored at the All-Metro High School Cross Country Awards Banquet.
ATLANTA, GA -- Three Cherokee County student athletes were among the 42 runners honored last week by Atlanta Track Club at its All-Metro High School Cross Country Awards Banquet.
Each year, the Atlanta Track Club hosts the banquet as part of its "commitment to recognize outstanding high school track and field and cross country athletes," the organization said in a press release.
The Cherokee County students who received All-Metro honors are:

- Nyah Hernandez – freshman at Creekview High School
- Brynne Sumner – sophomore at Woodstock High School
- Nick Cooke – senior at Etowah High School
The All-Metro athletes were selected based on criteria including major event wins, performance at the state meet and a complete season overview. The coaches and the community then voted to determine the athletes’ placement as 1st Team, 2nd Team or 3rd Team honorees. The 1st Team All-Metro honorees received a $500 scholarship from Atlanta Track Club. Hernandez was among those selected for the 1st Team.
“These harriers represent some of Georgia’s most talented athletes, and we are proud to celebrate their accomplishments alongside their parents and coaches at the 53rd annual All-Metro High School Cross Country Awards Banquet,” said Rich Kenah, Atlanta Track Club’s executive director.

One boy and one girl were named the 2016 Most Outstanding Cross Country Athlete: Sam Bowers, a junior at Milton High School; and Serena Tripodi, a senior at Lovett School.
Two coaches were also acknowledged for their outstanding dedication to the sport of cross country. The coaches were chosen from a group of community nominations. Coach Jason Scott of Harrison High School received the Paul Koshewa Award for his work with the girls cross country team, while Coach James Tigue of Lambert High School’s boys cross country team was the recipient of the Jerry Frasier Award.
