A grand opening celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 1 at the park, which sits at 600 Brown Industrial Parkway in the Canton-Cherokee Business and Industrial Park.

Festivities will include mini-clinics, giveaways, games and other activities. Recreation providers will also communicate information on the city’s upcoming youth leagues and other programs.

The city earlier this year held a soft opening of the park, meaning no active play could take place on the grass until officials give the green light. Residents are currently able to enjoy a playground, walking track, bridge over the Etowah River that leads to trails and an open-air amphitheater.

Original plans called for the construction of baseball fields. However, since the land of the park sits in a floodplain, the city and Cherokee County agreed to relocate the fields on Univeter Road close to Kenny Askew Park.

The construction of the park was funded with proceeds from Cherokee County’s parks bond, an initiative voters approved in 2008.
