Flash Flood Watch Issued For North Georgia

Heavy storms this weekend and rain continuing on Monday have promoted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood watch.

GEORGIA — Heavy rain this weekend that continued on Monday has caused a flash flood watch to be issued for much of north Georgia.

A frontal boundary will remain stalled across much of north and central Georgia through Wednesday morning. Waves of moderate to locally heavy rainfall are expected through Wednesday morning. Soils are already saturated and additional rainfall, even lighter amounts, will only exacerbate run off, the National Weather Service said.

One to three inches of rain has already fallen over the southern and eastern Atlanta metro areas and additional rainfall amounts of one to two inches are possible through the remainder of the day, NWS said. The axis of heavier rainfall is expected to shift northward overnight and Tuesday with additional rainfall amounts of one to three inches possible. Locally higher amounts, especially across the higher terrain of north Georgia, are also possible.

Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding, which can become a dangerous situation.

The NWS suggests monitoring later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Additionally, widespread showers and a few thunderstorms will continue to move along a stalled frontal boundary situated across portions of north and central Georgia Monday, NWS said. Rainfall will be heavy at times and localized flooding is possible.

Isolated thunderstorms will also be possible across much of north Georgia today. A few storms could be strong, but severe weather is not anticipated at this time, NWS said.

Showers and thunderstorms will persist into Saturday as a frontal boundary remains stalled over north Georgia. Heavy rainfall could again lead to flooding concerns as soils will already be saturated. The Flash Flood Watch will continue through early Wednesday morning.
