Kovacs Resigns From County Commission Seat

Bob Kovacs said increased work responsibilities has made it extremely difficult to properly serve the residents of Cherokee County.

CANTON, GA — The Cherokee County commissioner for District 3 has announced his resignation from the seat. Bob Kovacs, who was serving his first term on the Board of Commissioners, made his announcement at the commission's Tuesday, Dec. 4 meeting.

Kovacs, who was elected in 2016, said his decision was not an "easy or quick one," as it was driven by the work load at his full-time job. These responsibilities, he said, have increased over the last six months, and he's reached a point where he is "unable to dedicate the time and effort I feel is required to properly serve the citizens of Cherokee County."

"It is a time availability and time management issue — if I can't give it my full effort, I feel it's not fair to those I represent to continue to stay in the position," he said. "This is not a decision I took lightly, and I realize it may disappoint some, but I feel it's the right choice in these circumstances. There's never a good time to make a choice like this, but it had to be done, as I did not want to start missing meetings and be seen as an absentee commissioner.

Kovacs' resignation was effective Dec. 3. The governor will have to accept his letter to officially vacate the seat. This will allow the county to move forward in calling for a special election.

Following the governor's declaration, County Clerk Christy Black said the Cherokee County Board of Elections will have to schedule a meeting to approve calling a special election, set a qualifying period and meet all the legal advertising requirements.

The District 3 post covers parts of Canton and Holly Springs. Before he was elected to the County Commission in July 2016, Kovacs served on the Holly Springs Downtown Development Authority and the city's Planning and Zoning Commission and is a member of the Cherokee FOCUS Board of Directors.
