Rainy Conditions Delay Bells Ferry Road Reopening
Cherokee County said the storm drainage system is not fully installed and with more rain expected, it's not safe to reopen the road.

CANTON, GA — Cherokee County said rainy conditions over the next few days will hinder its plans to reopen a segment of Bells Ferry Road that's been closed due to an intersection realignment project.
No through traffic will be allowed on Bells Ferry Road from Sixes Road to Ridge Road through Aug. 10, the county said. A detour has been posted during the duration of the construction project, and drivers will have to use Sixes and Ridge roads to get around the closure.
Cherokee County and its contractor, Bartow Paving Company, had anticipated opening Bells Ferry Road to through traffic on Tuesday, July 31. However, the storm drainage system is not fully installed and with the National Weather Service calling for 2 to 4 inches of rain between now and Thursday, the area is currently under a Flash Flood Watch.

After just the small amount of rain that was received this afternoon, the asphalt and some of the curb that has been installed has been undermined. Therefore, with the amount of rain in the forecast, the county and Bartow Paving "do not feel comfortable in opening the road without the remaining curb and storm drainage in place, as any additional rain will allow the water to further destabilize the asphalt even more and will cause hazards for the traveling public," the county.

The county asks for the public's patience during the closure and reminds them to obey the posted detour for their safety as well as the safety of construction crews.
